The University of Delaware (UD) has acquired the former Chrysler Assembly Plant in Newark, DE. The almost 60-year-old landmark will be replaced with a 272-acre campus for high-tech research, business and academics, and is the largest-ever expansion of the Newark campus.
Ayers Saint Gross is collaborating with UD to develop a vision for the future of the Chrysler site and how it fits with the larger University and Newark context.
The grand vision for the University is to become a national leader in science and technology development, and a major job creating machine in the state. The location of this property-its strategic placement within the Mid-Atlantic region, its access to transportation systems, and its proximity to University programs, technical support and intellectual resources-presents unique advantages for regional economic development and growth..
The site will include space for startups and companies that want to capitalize on research relationships with the University faculty.
"We envision collaborating with a lot of different kinds of companies. The site will have more of a mixed use feel with housing, retail, academic space and transit," says Harker. The University looks forward to expanding its partnership with the U.S. Army by establishing additional research centers at the site, and ultimately win a contract to establish a national Army research center on campus. Students from the clinical campus of the Delaware Health Sciences Alliance will live on the campus and take classes at UD, making up the housing and academic component on the site.
