Full-service architecture and landscape architecture firm Hord Coplan Macht, Inc.'s (HCM) conversion of an existing parish elementary school into senior housing has been recognized by Baltimore Heritage for its contribution in maintaining Baltimore's historic places.

The project involved the adaptation of two buildings of the St. Dominic's Elementary School, in Baltimore City, into the repurposed John Manley House. The renovated building includes 30, one- and two-bedroom senior low-income apartments and related community spaces. Consideration was paid to preserving historically significant elements including the granite and limestone clad exterior as well as mosaic tile flooring, copper scupper boxes and even existing school chalkboards, which were salvaged and reused as community message boards. In addition to preserving the character of these two beautiful historic buildings, sustainable features were also introduced to make them more efficient.

Baltimore Heritage will present the award at their upcoming 50th anniversary gala to be held on Friday, June 11 at the Garret Jacobs Mansion.
