Thirty-one start-up technology companies located their operations in Baltimore's Emerging Technology Centers (ETC) City's in 2010, according to figures released by the ETC. ETC also had 18 technology companies graduate from the incubation program in 2010, with 65 percent of them staying in Baltimore City.
Over the last 5 years, an average of 23 new technology companies have launched at ETC per year.
"The ETC is all about generating successful companies," says Ann Lansinger, Executive Director of the ETC. "Each of these 31 companies has the potential to be dynamic, long-term members of Baltimore's business community and this region's burgeoning technology market."
Baltimore City is now home to a strong concentration of technology companies, including such ETC graduates as Millennial Media, Welldoc Inc., Moodlerooms and Lookkingglass.
Straighterline, the provider of online education solutions for students; 6th Street Inc., an innovative E-commerce solutions provider to the retail industry; and Groove Commerce, a full service eCommerce and Lead Generation firm, are among the new companies joining ETC in 2010.
"ETC's location, with it's proximity to Washington DC, and Baltimore's lower cost of doing business were critical factors in our relocation decision," said Burck Smith, CEO of StraighterLine.
"The support of ETC and its likeminded companies are top reasons we chose to locate our company here," said David Potts, CEO of 6th Street Inc. "For growing technology companies like us, Baltimore has a great potential for finding and attracting talent."
ETC works with early stage Baltimore-based technology entrepreneurs to help them move their businesses ahead farther and faster than they could on their own. It is estimated that ETC companies have created in excess of $273.5 million in economic activity for the City of Baltimore. Last year ETC's success was recognized by the National Business Incubation Association (NBIA). ETC was one of two finalists for the "Incubator of the Year" award.
