BALTIMORE - The Maryland Transportation Authority has selected a team led by Miami-based Areas USA to design, build and operate state-owned, LEED Silver-certified travel plaza facilities along Interstate 95 in the northeastern quadrant of the state.

Areas USA will lead a team of 10 Maryland-based companies. Ayers Saint Gross designed the plazas, which will be built by Clark Construction in conjunction with Cain Contracting of Columbia.

The state transportation authority unanimously approved the team's proposal. The next step is approval by the Maryland Board of Public Works followed by a 30-day review by the Maryland General Assembly.

The terms of the agreement require Areas USA to invest $56 million into the redevelopment of I-95's Maryland House and Chesapeake House. Each plaza will feature WiFi, additional bus parking and staffed Welcome Centers. Sunoco will operate the fuel facilities and convenience stores at both properties.

"We anticipate this public-private partnership will generate some 400 construction jobs and deliver roughly $400 million to the state over the duration of the 35-year contract," said Areas USA CEO Xavier Rabell.

Other Maryland-based businesses included in the Areas USA proposal are WBCM, civil and traffic engineer, L&J Construction, snow removal, L&J Waste Recycling Inc., waste management, 4 Evergreen Lawncare LLC, landscape maintenance, all from Baltimore; Cagley & Associates, structural engineer, Rockville; and NMP Engineering Consultants, Inc., water resources engineering, Hunt Valley.
